Oracle Virtual Box

Virtual Box is available under in MacLean M210, and on the PC Loaner Laptops.

Virtual Box is used to run:

  • ARMDev
    • Used in ENGS062 for programming ARM based programmable devices.
    • To run the ARMDev Virtual Machine, run "ARMDev" from the stat menu

Installation on a Personal Computer

System Requirements:

  • Microsoft® Windows 7 and above, Mac OS X 10.5 and newer on Intel hardware
  • RAM depends on Virtual Machine OS
  • 200 MB for VirtualBox but 8+ GB for Virtual Machine space

Windows 7 Installation

  1. Connect to the "Courses" volume on ThayerFS file server (ie. the P: drive, see also ThayerFS Connecting)
  2. Go to https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads and click "Windows hosts"
    1. Double click on VirtualBox-x.x.x.xxxx-Win.exe after downloading
    2. Accept all the defaults and "continue" through the install
  3. Go to and click All Supported Platforms after Virtualbox x.x.x.xxxx Oracle VM VirtualBox Extension Pack to download the VirtualBox extension pack, then double click on the download.
    1. Select "Install" or "Upgrade"
    2. Scroll to bottom of the VirtualBox License and Click on "I Agree"
    3. Continue until finished
  4. Follow directions for:
    1. ARMDev in P:\software\VMs\ARMDev_20130113\ARMDev_Directions.pdf
    2. AspenVM Setup (also in P:\software\aspen_vm\Aspen_setup.pdf)
  5. (Optional) Make Disk "Immutable", see below

Mac Installation

  1. Connect to the "Courses" volume on the ThayerFS file server (see ThayerFS Connecting)
  2. Download http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/4.3.20/VirtualBox-4.3.20-96996-OSX.dmg and
    1. Double click on VirtualBox-4.3.20-96996-OSX.dmg after downloading
    2. Double click on VirtualBox.mpkg
    3. Accept all the defaults and "continue" through the install
  3. Download http://download.virtualbox.org/virtualbox/4.3.20/Oracle_VM_VirtualBox_Extension_Pack-4.3.20-96996.vbox-extpack and double click on the download
    1. Select "Install" or "Upgrade"
    2. Scroll to bottom of the VirtualBox License and Click on "I Agree"
    3. Continue until finished
  4. Follow directiins for:
    1. ARMDev Setup (also in P:\software\VMs\ARMDev_20130113\ARMDev_Directions.pdf)
    2. AspenVM Setup (also in P:\software\aspen_vm\Aspen_setup.pdf)
  5. (Optional) Make Disk "Immutable", see below

Make Virtual Disk Immutable

This prevents the disk image from being changed.  An Immutable disk reverts to a beginning state after each restart.  This is good at preventing corruption from creeping into your VM, but prevents you from customizing the "Look and Feel" or adding software/features.  Also user files stored on an Immutable disks will get erased after each restart.

  1. Detach Disk
    1. Launch Virtual Box
    2. Select VM ("ARMDev_20130113") and click "Settings"
    3. On the "Storage" tab, Right Click on ARMDev_20130113... and select "Remove Attachment"
    4. Click "OK"
  2. Modify Disk
    1. Select File->Virtual Media Manager...
    2. Right Click on ArmDev_20130113.vdi and Click "Modify"
    3. Select "Immutable" and Click "OK"
    4. Click "Close"
  3. Reattach Disk
    1. Select VM ("ARMDev_20130113") and Click on "Settings"
    2. Select "Storage" tab, Right Click on "SATA Controller" and Select "Add Hard Disk"
    3. Click "Choose existing disk"
    4. Select "ARMDev_20130113", Click "Open", Click "OK"
