Google Account Consolidation

If you at some point created a Google account and associated it with your Dartmouth email address, it will conflict with your Google Kite account.  (All Thayer community members automatically get a Google Apps Kite account associated with your Dartmouth address.) When you try to log in with your Dartmouth email address, you'll be prompted to choose which account to log into.

There are a couple ways to resolve this by following the instructions below.  If you'd like help understanding or resolving this issue, please contact us.

Note: if your web browser is already logged into one or more Google accounts, it may be helpful to do the following steps in a different web browser, or an incognito/private window.

Option 1

Delete the existing Google account that is associated with your Dartmouth email address, and then access Kite without conflict.

This is the less confusing option, but if you have existing data in this account that you want to keep, you'll need to download the data and re-upload it to your Google Apps Kite account (or go to Option 2 to associate the account with a different email address).

If you don't actually use the Google Account associated with your Dartmouth email address, then we definitely recommend deleting it to resolve the conflict.

Deleting your old account associated with your dartmouth.edu email address

1. In your web browser, go to:  https://myaccount.google.com

2. Enter your Dartmouth Email address and click "Next".

3. You'll get a page that prompts you to select which account you are trying to access.  Select the "Individual Google Account" option. (The Organizational account is your Kite account.)

4. Enter the password you set for this Google account.  Note, this is not your Dartmouth password, it is unique to this account.  If you've forgotten the password you set when creating this account, click the "Forgot Password?" link and follow the instructions for resetting the password.

5. You'll then get a screen with options for resolving the address conflict.  Because we want to delete the account, you can skip this by clicking the "Do this later" button.

6. You'll be redirected the "My Account" page. Under the Account preferences section, click the "Delete your account or services" link.

7. Click the "Delete Google Account and data" option.  (It will first report any data you may have in Google services.  So you still have a chance to confirm the account deletion.)

8. Read the final screen to verify there isn't any data being deleted that you are unaware of.  If there is, see instructions about downloaded Google account data.

Check both boxes to confirm that you understand that you are deleting the account.

Finally, click the "Delete Account" button.

Option 2

Associate the existing Google account with an alternative email address.

If you are actively using the Google Account that was previously associated with your Dartmouth email address, Google provides the option to change the email address associated with this account.

1. In your web browser, go to:  https://myaccount.google.com

2. Enter your Dartmouth Email address and click "Next".

3. You'll get a page that prompts you to select which account you are trying to access.  Select the "Individual Google Account" option. (The Organizational account is your Kite account.)

3. Enter the password you set for this Google account.  Note, this is not your Dartmouth password, it is unique to this account.  If you've forgotten the password you set when creating this account, click the "Forgot Password?" link and follow the instructions for resetting the password.

4. Next you get a screen that asks how you want to resolve the address conflict.  You can assign your old Google account to a different email address.

If you want to continue to keep the accounts separate, select the second option and enter a new email address that you'd like to associate with the account.  If you don't have an alternative email address, you can  set up an email alias for your Dartmouth email account.

5. If you choose to associate your old Google account with an email address you already own, you'll then be prompted to enter the alternate email address and your Google account password.

6. Two emails will be sent.  One to the old address informing you of the change.  A second email will be sent to the new address with a link that must be clicked to verify that you own the new address.  Make sure to click the link in the email with the subject, "Google Accounts: Email Change Verification".
