Using OneNote at Dartmouth / Thayer

If you or your team wishes to use OneNote as a collaboration tool, it is recommended that Notebooks be generated on OneNote Online via https://bwa.dartmouth.edu or more directly in Office 365 by visiting https://portal.office.com This document will guide you through proper OneNote Notebook generation.

  1. Open your favorite web browser and visit https://portal.office.com
  2. Click on the OneDrive icon and it will bring you to your stored files
  3. Right click within the empty space below your documents. A menu will appear, select New > OneNote Notebook.
  4. Once OneNote Notebook is selected it will ask you for a Notebook name, for this example we will use Thayer Notes. The Notebook will then open in a new browser tab.
  5. Next go back to your OneDrive and right click on your Notebook. A menu will appear, click on Open > OneNote, do NOT click OneNote Online.
  6. Your browser may ask may ask which application to use, simply select OneNote and the program will start to open your Notebook.

7. Your Notebook will open in the desktop application, In the future you can log into your OneDrive and right click your Notebook on any device and have it open in the desktop application.

Please do not use the Notebook that comes with OneNote by default , this is not in OneDrive by default and will remain locally on your computer, this could lead to loss of your Notebook if your hard drive fails.
