Windows Updates on Thayer Computers
On Thayer managed Windows computers, updates are handled through the Software Center. Once updates are available, they will show up in the "Updates" tab of the Software Center. From there, they can be installed and, once complete, the computer will usually need to reboot.
Updates are released two days after the second Tuesday of each month (second or third Thursday), and usually require a reboot. Once the updates become available, you will have 24 hours to voluntarily install the updates. A window should pop up offering you the opportunity to reboot and install updates. After that 24 hour period ends, if you haven't installed the updates, a new 24 hour timer will begin. Once the 24 hour period is reached, the computer will forcibly install the updates and restart. Again, you should receive ample warning that this will occur.
Again: you will have a 24 hour period after updates are published to voluntarily install, then another 24 hours to voluntarily reboot before your computer will automatically reboot.
If your computer was powered off when the updates were initially published, the next time your computer starts, they will install immediately and the 24 hour reboot timer will start.
If you have long running tasks that can't handle a reboot, you can check in the Software Center for updates before running the task. If you think the long running process might span an update period but there are no updates available yet, the easiest solution is to disconnect the device from the internet while that process is running. If that's not possible, please contact Thayer Computing to work out a solution.
